Stepping into history. The road meandered alongside the never-ending coastline while white waves jumped into the air, crashing against the rocky shoreline. We were approaching our tenth day of travel in our temporary home on wheels. It had been an unforgettable trip that led us across diverse, magical terrain. Our feet had climbed up the slick, glacial, ice fields of the southern mountains; they had sunk into thick, black, sandy beaches that kept the ocean at bay; they had trudged through steep, rocky, wind-swept hills of the fjords; and they had pushed through the rain soaked, lush, green hills that dotted the island. Each day, the sun had rose to reveal a new unique landscape waiting to be explored. As our time was coming to an end the road had led us into the past. On this day, each step took us closer to storied times of old, to the history preserved within the ancient farmlands and weathered monuments. Their stories and legacy still standing strong against the test of time.
