Silence. The last murmurs of man had drifted off into the night sky hours ago leaving stillness in its wake. I was alone, marooned on a cold, coarse slab of granite, surrounded by shimmering black water. The beating of my heart was the only reminder that this was not a dream. “Just one more,” I kept mumbling to myself “then I’ll call it a night.” With one last click of the camera I sentenced myself to another eternity of solitude. Time slowed to a crawl. The warm feeling of whiskey began to fade as the chill of midnight in the mountains slowly seeped through my jacket. Fighting to stay warm and awake, I lied down to count the shooting stars overhead. Bit by bit the sky transformed from bitter hues of blue to a soft golden glow, bringing with it a welcomed feeling of warmth. It was time to call it a night before I no longer had the chance.
