Story

Conversations on the Mountain. The steady, rhythmic sound of her boots kicking into the ice encrusted snow abruptly came to a halt. With a deep long inhale she fought to claim as much oxygen as possible in the thin mountain air. Pausing to ask about conditions on the summit, she quickly fell behind her party. “It’s beautiful up there,” I said, “Plenty of good snow all the way up, but watch out for wind at the summit, it’s pretty ridiculous today.” After being continually pushed off balance with gusty winds breaking 40 mph, I was grateful to be on my way down. At the summit I was in a constant battle against the elements. Hard hail mixed with soft snowflakes in the air to create a winter flurry of pain and beauty. But it is this struggle, this determination, and the feeling of victory that makes the gorgeous views at 12,280 ft even better. It has been far too long since I’ve been surrounded by fresh powder at elevation, the time has come. The mountains are calling and I must go.
